Tai Chi Student Class Protocols

"It should be understood that Tai Chi is a highly individual art and no two masters, even at the same school, will perform it in exactly the same way."  Lu Hui Ching

The following protocols are intended to clarify the attitudes behaviors and performance standards that define the culture of our Tai Chi community:

Model the code of honor are respect for self and for others in class and beyond.  Do not interrupt during lessons.

Be attentive and practice what is taught.  Avoid the temptation to demonstrate what you have not practiced and do not understand, for it will always be evident that you do not understand and have not practiced.

Evaluate self-performance and avoid the temptation to evaluate the performance of others.  Acknowledge only what is practiced well in others and find what needs attention in your own practice.

Practice alone and with others, and celebrate what you have learned while recognizing there is much that you have not yet learned.

Be patient with yourself and honor your learning process and timeline.  Be kind and supportive to others and honor their learning process and timeline.

Remain true to yourself at all times, and avoid the temptation to copy the form of another.  Practice the form in your own way, consistent with your own ability level and unique learning style.

Find one teacher who can guide you in your learning, and demonstrate respect for that teacher at all times.  If a situation presents itself that necessitates changing teachers, respectfully talk with your current teacher about why you need/want to study with someone else, and then ask permission of a new teacher to study in that class.

Refrain from trying to teach Tai Chi before your are certified to do so.

Respect the lineage of the form and all the masters who have brought it to you over generations.
